When you or someone you love is dealing with a mental health concern, sometimes it’s a lot to handle. It’s important to remember that mental health is essential to everyone’s overall health and well-being, and mental illnesses are common and treatable.
May is Mental Health Month was started 70 years ago by Mental Health America to raise awareness about mental health, reduce the stigma of mental illness and promote healthy habits to achieve the overall wellness of our mental and physical state.
Julia Sauceda, LPC, counselor at Community Health Network, describes mental health as a reduction in anxiety and stress to where it is not interrupting daily functioning. “The problem is the stigma surrounding mental health. People tend to be scared about what people will think when considering receiving mental health services but we all need help sometimes,” said Julia, LPC. “Your mental health is more important than anything and your state of wellbeing since it can effect things such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, headaches and even affect your teeth.”
Maintaining a healthy mental state may not be easy but can be achieved by gradually making small changes, including, finding a reason to laugh, exercising, playing with a pet, sleeping a full eight hours, working from home once a week or even disconnecting from your smart devices can go a long way in making you both physically and mentally healthy.
