Community Health Network Partners with Athena and Houston Food Bank to Distribute Food to Freeport Patients

Posted on December 4, 2018

Community Health Network (CHN) partnered with Athena Health and the Houston Food Bank to provide 104 CHN patients and eligible community members in Freeport with fresh vegetables and fruits and canned goods the day before Thanksgiving. The food giveaway event was held at CHN’s Freeport Community Health Center, 905 N. Gulf Blvd, Freeport, TX 77541 on November 21, 2018.
CHN staff volunteered to register patients and participants for the event from 3pm to 6pm while Houston Food Bank staff distributed cases of sweet potatoes, green beans, and corn, cucumbers and other produce. Everyone that presented left with enough food to feed a household; and if two adults presented from the same family, both received a household amount.
Athena Health and the Houston Food Bank partnered with several federally qualified health centers like CHN in Texas for the unique food giveaway in November. A federally qualified health center (FQHC) is a health center that serves an underserved area or population, offers a sliding fee scale, provides comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health services, and qualifies for funding under Section 330 of the Public Health Service Act (PHS). CHN is a FQHC serving Brazoria and Galveston Counties.
